If you see a "Network cable unplugged" message, first ascertain whether this is normal or not. Depending on how you are connected, there may be an ethernet port on your computer that is not used, and therefore will almost always be unplugged—for example, if you are connected wirelessly with a laptop, or if you have more than one port. If, however, this is a new message, then there are a few things that this could mean.
Keep in mind that, if you are using a router, your computer should be able to successfully connect to that router even if the Plainsnet signal to your site is completely down. A "Network cable unplugged" message does not always indicate that Plainsnet is down to your site. Often it simply means that your computer is not connected to the router.
1. A network cable is indeed unplugged. The network cable end should look like an oversized telephone connector. In the picture to the left it is the port and connector on the right side. If you do not have a wireless connection on the computer you are using, then you should have a network cable plugged into a port on your computer. Ensure that it has not come unplugged and that it is securely connected. Unplug it and plug it back in.
Follow that cable to see where it leads. If you have a router then the other end should be connected there. If this computer is the only device connected to the internet and you are not using a router, then you should see one of the devices pictured on the right. Ensure all network cables are securely connected and all devices are powered on.
2. The device to which the computer is connected has lost power or has become defective. If you are connected to a router, take a close look at it. Are any of the lights on? If not, then ensure the power cable is securely connected at both the back of the router and the A/C outlet. If it is plugged into a power strip or UPS unit, ensure it is turned on.
Once you have taken these steps, if the router's lights fail to reappear, then you can be reasonably sure that you have a defective router. You may purchase one from us or from your local electronics store, or online from websites such as Amazon.com or Newegg.com.
If you do not have a router or similar device, then you should be plugged directly into a power injector/PoE adapter (similar to one of the devices pictured directly above and to the right of this section). Most of these will have one or two green lights that activate when they are receiving power—do you see a light? If not, ensure that the adapter is securely plugged into the power outlet and, if applicable, the PoE device itself. If it is plugged into a power strip or UPS unit, ensure that the unit is turned on.
Once you have taken these steps, if the light(s) fail to come on, then you may have a defective power adapter. If so, then that is on us. Contact us to schedule a repair. Alternatively, if you are fairly certain that this is the problem, and if you have contacted us and we concur, then feel free stop by our office if you would like to try replacing the power supply yourself. Be sure to bring the adapter that you believe to be defective so that we can test it.
3. The ethernet port on your computer or device is defective. If you have a router, and the lights are on, ascertain whether the port which contains the cable that comes from your computer is lit. Try unplugging it and see if one of the lights goes off. Then plug it into another port and check the lights to determine whether a different light came on. If so, check to see whether the problem is resolved.
If the neither the router's indicator lights nor any lights on the ethernet port itself show any change when you switch ports, but you can tell that the router is on because you can see the lights on it, then there is a good chance that your network interface card—your NIC—may be defective. This sometimes happens due to power surges. You should be able to have a new one installed. We can do it for you, or you may take it to a local computer repair shop. Alternatively, you may buy a USB WiFi adapter that you may use to connect to your wireless router instead.
